David Sheedy
David Sheedy’s lifetime purpose as a heritage architect was to conserve and restore heritage buildings and engineering, so that future generations could enjoy and reflect on the foundational crafts of the past that influence innovative design for a sustainable future.
Taking stock of the bespoke built and engineered environment respects the skills, knowledge and mastery of crafts people of New South Wales and greater Sydney’s historical past. It is the recognition of our forebears work which reads as a statement of cultural adaption, a history of social cultural reflection and the capacity for future didactic contexts.
Artifacts of the past were intended to last a lifetime. Today our understanding of a sustainable future is the adaptive use of built resources. Capturing value is not only monetary but also securing cultural characteristics of our lived social heritage.
David served on a number of committees over his lifetime for the National Trust of NSW including the Historic Buildings Committee, Architectural Advisory Committee, General Properties Committee, and the Railway Liaison Committee.
David was also the Honorary Trust Architect and the representative on the Railway Heritage Committee for the National Trust of NSW. He was the driving force for the establishment of the NSW State Rail Heritage Group.
David also volunteered his services to the Conservation Division of the National Trust of NSW providing extensive research and background material for over 1000 properties needed for classification listings on the Trust’s Public Register. For all his endeavours the Trust awarded him the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018 for heritage conservation.
The David Sheedy Foundation will continue David’s ongoing commitment to pursuing the wisdom of past which goes hand in hand with an innovative future.
